Raccoons in London — what’s specific to this area

London’s raccoon density is high — the Thames River corridor runs through the city centre and along Springbank Park, providing year-round water, food, and den habitat for an urban raccoon population that’s bigger than most homeowners realize. A few patterns we see specifically in London:

  • Old North, Wortley Village, Old South, and Woodfield have a high concentration of late-19th and early-20th-century homes with original wood soffits, fascia, and chimneys. Aged soffit corners and chimney flashing are the most common entry points for attic raccoons.
  • Garbage day patterns matter — raccoons learn the schedule, and the night before pickup is when most yard incursions happen.
  • Deck dens are very common in residential London — mothers raising kits under raised decks and porches, especially in Byron, Westmount, and Lambeth. Spring (April–May) is peak deck-den season.
  • St. Thomas, Strathroy, and the rural fringe add their own pattern: outbuildings, barns, and detached garages give raccoons more den options, and the call mix shifts toward attic and outbuilding work rather than under-deck.

About London raccoons

Raccoons (Procyon lotor) are sleek, agile, and clever. They’re omnivores — fruits, nuts, garbage, small animals, pet food, compost — and they thrive in urban environments like London. Adults weigh 4–10 kg (rarely up to 23 kg in extreme cases), with the distinctive black mask, ringed tail, and dexterous front paws.

Breeding cycle:

  • Mating: February–March
  • Pregnancy: about 63 days
  • Kits born: mostly April–May, with a smaller summer window
  • Litter size: typically 2–5 kits
  • Kits stay with mother in the den until 8–10 weeks old

If you’re hearing noises in the attic between March and June, expect kits.

Raccoon health concerns

  • Baylisascaris (raccoon roundworm): transmitted through raccoon feces. Rare in humans but serious when it happens, especially in young children. Don’t handle raccoon latrines yourself — call us or contact the Middlesex-London Health Unit.
  • Rabies: raccoons are a primary rabies vector in Ontario. A raccoon acting strangely (out in daylight without apparent food motivation, disoriented, unprovoked aggression) should be avoided.
  • Leptospirosis, salmonella: present in raccoon urine and feces; standard PPE during cleanup.
  • Ticks, fleas, and lice: common parasites on wild raccoons.

How to prevent raccoons from getting into your London home

  • Secure your garbage cans. A locking lid plus a bungee strap, and bring cans in overnight where possible.
  • Cap your chimney. Heavy-gauge stainless steel cap. Cheap clip-on caps don’t last a season.
  • Inspect soffits, fascia, and roof flashing annually. Most attic intrusions start at a soffit or fascia gap.
  • Trim tree branches back from the roof by at least 6–8 feet.
  • Cover open foundation vents and bathroom/dryer exhausts with rust-proof, heavy-gauge mesh.
  • Eliminate food sources: pet food brought in at night, fallen fruit picked up, compost secured.

Important: if you suspect raccoons in the attic during kit season (March–July), confirm the den is empty before sealing. Sealing in a mother whose kits are inside causes more damage and is inhumane.

Raccoons in the attic?

The most common London raccoon job. You’ll typically hear them at night — heavy footsteps, scratches, kit chittering. Mothers raise kits in attic insulation, often in gable corners. Damage adds up fast: torn insulation, chewed wiring, contaminated nesting material, and structural damage to soffit and fascia entries.

The fix is identify the entry, confirm whether kits are present, install one-way exclusion (if no kits) or hands-on removal (with kits), then seal and clean.

Raccoons in the garbage?

Unsecured garbage is the most common attractant in residential London. Raccoons defeat most commercial “raccoon-proof” bins. The cheapest, most effective fix is a locking lid with a bungee strap, plus bringing the can into the garage overnight. If a raccoon has set up a regular route, trapping may be necessary — but solving the food access usually solves the visitor problem.

Raccoons under the deck?

Very common London job, especially spring. Raised decks, porches, and sheds make ideal den space. Mothers with kits will defend the den — keep kids and pets clear, and let us handle the exclusion. Once the family is out, we install heavy-gauge mesh below grade so they (or the next raccoon) can’t dig back in.

How we remove your raccoon problem

1. Inspect for entry points and signs

We walk the property, find the entry, check for latrines, look for paw prints and damaged soffit corners, and assess whether kits are present.

2. Check for kits

Most London raccoon jobs in April–July involve kits. Timing changes if they’re present: we wait until they can travel, or we do a hands-on family removal.

3. Humane removal

Either one-way exclusion at the entry (no kits) or hands-on family removal (kits present, or where access requires it). Size-appropriate humane traps when trapping is needed. No bait that would attract non-target animals.

4. Clean up and seal

Heavy-gauge mesh and chew-resistant materials at every entry. Latrine clean-up with proper PPE. Damaged insulation removed and replaced where contamination is heavy.

Signs you have raccoons

  • Droppings in the attic or near the roof edge
  • Heavy footsteps, thumps, or kit chittering from the attic at night
  • Tracks on siding, decking, or around foundation vents
  • Holes or torn corners in soffits and roof flashing
  • A garbage can that keeps getting knocked over
  • Raccoons regularly visible at dusk on the property

Customer reviews — London and area

“We used Dave for bat removal in the past, and he was able to set up some exclusions and fix the problems. This time we had a raccoon mom and babies. Dave was back and quick as ever — got the problem fixed by trapping the raccoons humanely and proofing the house. Very happy with the results!” — Lisa Watson

“We had a raccoon in the backyard that was being very aggressive and scaring my family. We were worried about rabies, so we called The Critter Guy. Roman came out and was so nice — he set up a trap and caught the mother AND her baby. He explained that the mother was being very protective and that they’d be released in a conservation area. Excellent service and highly recommended for any raccoon job.” — Emma Bucksley
